Urban Tribe attaches great importance to local craftsmanship, to the authenticity and originality of its products.
We had worked stone and silver in India.  This year, our range is expanding with a collection of ethnic cotton fabrics with natural dyes of plant origin.
The "block print" or "wooden stamp" is a manual printing technique, an ancestral know-how from Rajasthan, in northern India.  Technique that has come back in force for a few years, in fashion and decoration, for a chic, bohemian ethnic spirit.
A pattern (animal, vegetable or geometric) is drawn on paper.  The pattern is then carefully carved by hand on a block of wood (in principle, rosewood).
A single block corresponds to a color.  Several blocks are needed to make a pattern.
The block is then impregnated with vegetable dye.  The difficulty is to ensure that the superposition of the colors that make up a pattern is perfectly achieved.
To print a pattern that has three colors, you need 3 blocks successively affixed to the fabric.  This work is entirely manual, it requires patience and extreme precision.
The imprint that is made by exerting pressure with the hand on the stamp impregnated with color is therefore irregular and unique, making the charm of each piece.
